Practical Information

Important information you will need to know when traveling to Fiji;

  • Climate

Fiji has a warm, sub-tropical climate with only 2 seasons, summer (Nov- Apr) and winter (May-Oct). The average daily temperature consistently sits between about 26⁰c and 31⁰c. However, rainfall and humidity vary across the 2 main islands: Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, due to tall mountain ranges and the dominant southeast trade winds.

Read about Fiji’s weather in November or visit the Fiji Meteorological Service website for more information on Fiji’s climate.

  • What to wear

At ATTA (Adventure Travel Trade Association) events, the attire is “Adventure Casual”. This simply means jeans or pants with a shirt/ blouse or workshop appropriate tops. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable (bearing in mind Fiji’s tropical climate) and “adventure – ready” outfits.

If you’re feeling adventurous after the conference and planning to visit village settings/ communities, it is advised that you carry a sarong, locally known as “sulu”, with you and wear it before you enter the village. This is local custom, commonly practiced in village settings by men and women, mostly amongst women. Simply wrap it around your waist (like a wrap- around) and you’re good to go.  Read more about Fijian village etiquette.

  • Languages

English is Fiji’s official language, with Fijian and Fiji Hindi also widely spoken.  Read more about

the culture, people and religions that call Fiji home.

  • Electricity

Fiji uses 240V in electrical current and 50HZ in electrical frequency. The power plugs and sockets commonly used in Fiji are of Type 1 therefore, if your devices do not fit the power socket or require different voltage, then you may need travel adapters or converters.

  • Currency

Fiji has its own currency, Fijian dollars (FJD or FJ$) that is managed by the Reserve Bank of Fiji.  The Fijian dollar value comes in coins; 5₵, 10₵, 20₵, 50₵, $1 and $2, and notes; $5, $7, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Basically, 100 cents (₵) equal a dollar ($1). Because there are no coins valued at 1₵ or 2₵, prices are rounded up to the nearest 5₵ or 10₵ value when paying in cash. Unless you’re paying by debit or with credit card, you will be charged the exact price. Cash is the most common form of payment in Fiji however, it is recommended that you have both cash and card on you when traveling as most hotels are cashless now. While there may be other mediums of payment, it is also recommended that you have enough Fijian Dollars with you when dealing with locals.

ATMs are widely available around the urban and semi- urban areas. These are operated by major commercial banks operating in Fiji; BSP, ANZ, Westpac , HFC, Bank of Baroda and BRED Bank, be sure to check out their websites for more information on bank service, ATM locations and credit card charges as well as foreign exchange. Consequently, you will also need to consult with your local bank operators to check your card’s foreign transactions eligibility.

  • Tipping

Tipping is not customary in Fiji; however, it is welcomed as means of gratuity for good service. Some resorts have a staff Christmas fund that guests can contribute to instead that benefits all resort staff equally.

  • Credit Card

Widely accepted credit cards in Fiji are MasterCard, Visa and American Express. It is recommended that you check with your issuing bank the charges for using your credit card in Fiji, “foreign currency service fee”. Additionally, you may also encounter credit card surcharge fee practiced by many businesses in Fiji, mostly 3% for every credit card transaction.

  • Mobile Phone Service

Fiji has 3 major network providers, with Vodafone and Digicel as major mobile networks operating on the GSM platform and Telecom Fiji Limited (TFL) operating on the CDMA network. Peek into the respective websites for more information on mobile data roaming, e- sim and local mobile network deals.

  • Drinking Water

Tap water is generally safe to drink in urban and major resort areas but can become contaminated after prolonged periods of heavy rain.  Wherever possible, opt for bottled or filtered water.  Some higher end resorts provide you with a complimentary daily water bottle but if you’re on a budget, it is always cheaper to buy some at a local supermarket before you head to your resort.

  • Emergency Call

Vital numbers that can come in handy during your stay in Fiji;

  • Time Zone

Fiji observes one time zone, Fiji Time (FJT) which is UTC+12.
